If you are old enough to remember the arcade game Gauntlet, then you can probably remember the tense, panicky feeling that everyone got when someone collected the “IT” orb. This simple game mechanic turned the person that collected the orb into a walking enemy magnet that attracted all the enemies visible on the level. For the other players on the level, this might have been a source of great enjoyment if it wasn’t for the second part of the game mechanic. The person that was “IT” could pass it to someone else by colliding with them. So when the Valkyrie collected the orb, the Elf, Wizard and Warrior would instantly panic and try to get away from the Valkyrie as quickly as possible, all ideals of teamwork thrown out of the window. Equally, the Valkyrie would turn their attention to their teammates of mere moments ago, looking for the closest player that they could offload their unfortunate burden onto whilst saving their own bacon.

These were probably the best moments of the game for me. A chaotic scramble in which all allegiances are forgotten, desperately trying to get to safety by evading the “IT” player until the timer expires, or they get brutally savaged by the monsters.

In a desperate attempt to reclaim that feeling and possibly my childhood, I’ve decided to develop a game based on the above concept. I’m not a game developer, although I can develop C# applications, so it will be a journey of learning. And mistakes. And probably tears, frustration, anger, more learning and joy. I will document the entire process here.
